Reproduction parts suck

I think I've found the motto of all makers of reproduction parts.

Kinja'd!!!

I installed a reproduction inner fender this weekend because there are no suitable donors in the area junkyards. I've been burned before so I tried a new supplier that has pretty good reviews. It didn't fit. Oh, it mostly fit. I could line up the majority of the bolt holes but then the rest were off by an eighth to a quarter of an inch and the drill had to come out. I'm so tired of this bullshit.

Going to find out today whether the repro rear lower fenders from Klokkerholm for a W123 Benz fit. Should be pretty good, but we'll see.

Incidentally, some very complex repro parts don't quite fit by design, due to patentable or trademarkable fit factors of the piece. It can be, not even joking, illegal to sell a perfect repro part.

These are licensed repro parts so it's not a legal matter. They just suck.

'71 Camaro. Most parts, other than the front and other micellaneous things, will interchange up to '77 but suddenly those cars are not hitting the junkyards around here.

Then I can reply with confidence.

New GM steel is usually either Golden Legion (I think that's the name) or DII (Dynacorn).

All of the big houses (NPD, Classic Industries, Year One, Eckler's, Ground Up) sell the same parts from one of the same distributors. Some might have their own spec (Goodmark I think) but they have been known to fuck up the stampings.

I used to like Rick's First Gen (now Eckler's) because they listed "GOOD" "BETTER" "BEST" alongside the prices of repro steel.

I have had good experiences with DII steel. It matches the factory gauge and has always fit well.

This time I tried Auto Metal Direct with no joy. I have ordered from Rick's/Eckler's before but not large sheetmetal items. I will definitely give Dynacorn or Golden Legion a try if/when I decide to replace the other fender.

I'd give Rick's a call and see what they say. Fortunately I don't need any more steel at this time.

that's why I search search and search for good originals or NOS stuff, I never have any good luck with aftermarket crap. I've used NPD alot on my 68 Camaro with success and have started using Ricks due to them having more correct original style parts since I'm getting the car ready for concourse events

I think part of the issue is that repro manufacturers often buy used up tooling from the original maker, so tolerances for stuff like body panels are all out of whack because they're made using worn-out equipment.
